McGregor (part 1)

Farmland in McGregor

McGregor is a delightful little olde-worlde village at the foot of the Riviersonderend (river without end) mountains, about 20km from the nearest ‘big’ town of Robertson. I had been here many years ago, when I did the Greyton to McGregor hiking trail, but couldn’t remember much of the village itself. Our time was spent in the mountains then (which are stunning by the way) and it rained on the second day, so we only drove through the village on our way out. This time I walked through the village on foot in order to see as much of it as I could, and the weather played along beautifully.

My visit also included a stop at the McGregor Wine Cellars where we tasted some of the locally produced wines. Very friendly attendance and definitely worth the visit.

In 1862 McGregor was officially proclaimed, and smallholders and farmers bought all the available land by 1905. Originally it was known as Lady Grey, but due to confusion with another town by the same name in the Eastern Cape, the village was renamed after the Dutch Reformed Church’s pastor, Rev Andrew McGregor,  in 1906.

Well worth a visit, and if you want to know more, read about McGregor’s History.

I visited Eseltjiesrus (more about this in next post), which is opposite the McGregor Wine Cellars, and browsed through their quaint shop selling all sorts of interesting goodies.
