City of Cape Town Steam Train

City of Cape Town Steam Train

Cape Town has an old fashioned steam train that runs from Cape Town through to Simon’s Town. The train is operated by Atlantic Rail and you can make bookings through them. I haven’t been on it myself (but would like to), but went to take some photographs one weekend at the beginning of 2011 when it came past. At this stage the railway between Glencairn and Simon’s Town was still being repaired so it stopped in Glencairn.

There were several photographers taking pics, so the driver took the train back to before Glencairn and then came full steam around the beach just for us. We also got to see the engine up close on Glencairn station. All in all a worthwhile outing and I’d love to take some more photos, so maybe will go to Simon’s Town one weekend to see it there. Hopefully the weather will be more sunny too as it was overcast on this day.  Driving along the coast from Kalk Bay to Fish Hoek one Sunday we saw it again and noticed that the name had changed from City of Cape Town to Jenny. Less formal I suppose.

Don’t know why, but I just find these trains fascinating. Like vintage cars. And submarines – also did a photoshoot if the SAS Assegai, the ‘retired’ submarine of the SA Navy now a floating museum in Simon’s Town.
