SAS Assegaai – submarine museum

SAS Assegaai - SA Navy submarine

The SAS Assegaai is a decommissioned Daphne-class submarine of the South African Navy. It was rescued from destruction by Retired Rear Admiral Arne Söderlund who formed the Save Our Submarine organization specifically for this purpose (it was too late for the other 2 Daphne subs as they weren’t so lucky – they were chopped up for scrap metal).

Arne did our tour himself, along with a retired former Captain of the Assegaai (forgot his name – help anyone?), and they were a wealth of information and stories, being very proud of the submarine and their association with it. I’d never been in a submarine so found it extremely interesting, especially seeing the cramped environment so many men had to live in. Privacy is something you cannot enjoy on a sub. And you can’t even go outside to be alone!

There are tons of articles about the sub – here’s one from the Navy about the opening ceremony on the SAS Assegaai.
